'School Spirits' Cast Discuss Eerie New Series

There’s no doubt that high school can be a tricky time. Many teens in high school feel like it can be a sort of prison, or purgatory. For the cast of School Spirits, it essentially was. The latest Paramount+ original series follows Maddie Nears, (Peyton List) as she learns about her own death, realizing she now takes the form of a ghost, trapped within her high school.

Maddie soon meets a group of fellow students, from different periods of time in the school’s history, who died in the school, and make up a reluctant support group for one another. The series takes a turn early on, in which Maddie finds a way to communicate with her friend, Simon (Kristian Flores) as the two, along with Maddie’s newfound ghost allies, attempt to solve the mystery of her death. What follows are a series of twists and turns that not even the cast themselves could quite guess until given the full scripts. The series channels the vibe of similar teen mystery series of yesteryear, such as Pretty Little Liars, while also making use of its unique and even ghastly premise.

The cast and crew of School Spirits were kind enough to speak with FilmSpeak in a round table interview, where they discussed their own theories about the series’ twists and turns, how they factored their own high-school experiences into their craft, and how they found their niche in the tried-and-true high school genre.

School Spirits is now streaming exclusively on Paramount+
