Mad Max Spinoff, 'Furiosa' Released Major Casting Announcement

A prequel spinoff movie centered and titled around the character ‘Furiosa’ from ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is in development, according to Deadline. The feature length origin story will star Anya-Taylor Joy as the titular warrior with Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II alongside her. George Miller will return to direct his first film since 2015’s ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ in which Furiosa was played by Oscar-winning actor Charlize Theron.

The spinoff movie will tell the story of Furiosa’s life before she met Max, played by Tom Hardy in the 2015 flick. There has been no report of either Hardy or Theron returning to reprise their roles in the near future. On top of directing, Miller will co-write and produce with his producing partner Doug Mitchell. The Miller-owned Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner will produce the feature.

‘Fury Road’ was released to overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film then went on to win 6 Oscars at the 2016 Academy Awards and made about $374 million at the global box office on a reported budget of about $150 million. There was also a ‘Black and Chrome Edition’ aka a black and white version of ‘Fury Road’ released over a year after the film’s theatrical run.

Anya Taylor-Joy recently starred in ‘Emma’ based on the 1815 Jane Austen novel of the same name and has been on the rise as far as younger Hollywood stars goes. Chris Hemsworth of course has become a household name from Thor fame within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been making waves with back to back big projects like Aquaman, Watchmen, Candyman and The Matrix. With a cast and crew this talented, the ‘Furiosa’ film is looking like one of the few good spinoffs of a larger franchise.

The film is currently in the advanced stages of development and there is currently no release date.
