Director James Wan Promises A More Serious Tone In 'Aquaman 2'

The virtual convention DC FanDome is coming to close and Aquaman is one of the last big panels of the day. Director James Wan was joined by Patrick Wilson who plays Orm aka Ocean Master in the 2018 film.

While there wasn’t much they could share about the sequel, Wan did say that the “second one is a little more serious and a little more relevant to today’s world.”

Wilson also asked if there would be more worlds explored because he “knows how much [Wan] loves world-building.” Wan replied, “I can guarantee there will be new worlds.”

They also dove into some behind the scene anecdotes about the difficulty of filming underwater scenes on the blue screen. Wilson said he will likely be adding different exercises to build his core strength for the next film but as far as acting against an empty room, he said, “it’s like black box theater.” Black box theater is a type of performance area to perform theater art in a completely blank space. Essentially, a stage with no set. Despite this, Wilson seemed to enjoy his time enough to come back for a sequel.

There was no mention of the announced spinoff ‘The Trench,’ that reportedly was in the works immediately after Aquaman’s theatrical release.

The film is in the early stages of pre-production and at the moment still has a release date of December 16, 2022 according to Forbes.

Disney recently pushed the Avatar sequel to the same date so it is unknown if this will cause Aquaman to shift. However, after making over 1.1 billion dollars at the global box office in 2018, that spot is a prime market for big budget blockbusters these days.
