Netflix took to social media Saturday to reveal the first images of director David Fincher’s upcoming movie, ‘Mank.’ The film will revolve around Herman J. Mankiewicz writing the screenplay for the 1941 American cinema classic, ‘Citizen Kane’ directed by Orson Welles. David Fincher’s father, Jack Fincher will be penning the Netflix flick and Gary Oldman will play the eponymous Mankiewicz. The supporting characters were also announced and a bevy of old Hollywood giants will be played by today’s stars.

The film will re-team Fincher with composers Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor as well as his cinematographer, Erik Messerschmidt from ‘Mindhunter.’

‘Citizen Kane’ is largely regarded as the greatest film of all time and reigned number one on BFI until this year when it was beat out in a poll by Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo.’ While ‘Kane’ was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won Best Screenplay at the 1942 Oscars, many contemporary critics feel the Best Picture award was robbed by the hardly mentioned, ‘How Green Was My Valley’ from John Ford.

The full cast for ‘Mank’ was announced as follows:

  • Gary Oldman - Herman J. Manckiewicz

  • Amanda Seyfried - Marion Davies

  • Lily Collins - Rita Alexander

  • Arliss Howard - Louis B. Mayer

  • Tom Pelphrey - Joe Mankiewicz

  • Sam Troughton - John Houseman

  • Ferdinand Kinsley - Irving Thalberg

  • Tuppence Middleton - Sara Mankiewicz

  • Tom Burke - Orson Welles

  • Joseph Cross - Chares Lederer

  • Jamie McShane - Shelly Metcalf

  • Toby Leonard Moore - David O. Selznick

  • Monkia Grossman - Fraulein Freda

  • Charles Dance - William Randolph Hearst

The images released below showcase beautiful composition and lighting evocative of the Noir elements present in ‘Citizen Kane.’ If Fincher and and his DP Messerschmidt attempt to emulate or honor the incredible Gregg Toland’s work, the visuals alone will be award worthy. Each picture was accompanied by dialogue in what is presumably excerpts from the screenplay.

‘Mank’ has no official release date but “coming soon” to Netflix.
