Chris Evans Rumored to be in Talks to Return as Captain America in the MCU

EVANS, WHO PLAYED STEVE ROGERS IN TEN MCU FILMS, INCLUDING ‘CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR’ AND ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’, WAS REPORTED BY DEADLINE TO BE NEARING A DEAL WITH MARVEL TO RETURN TO HIS ICONIC ROLE. HOWEVER, THE ACTOR HAS DENIED THE RUMOR ON TWITTER.

There’s a possibility that Chris Evans might pick up Captain America’s shield one last time and return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadline reported on Thursday that Evans, according to “insiders”, was in advanced negotiations with Marvel Studios to reprise the role of Steve Rogers in at least one more MCU film, with a second appearance also being a possibility.

Evans debuted in the role in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” and went on to be a central figure of the franchise, appearing in ten more of the series’ films, including two more “Captain America” titles and all four “Avengers” films. Evans bowed out of the role in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”, having made it clear on social media that it would be his final appearance in the role, tweeting his appreciation to fans in October 2018 for supporting him.

Evans has been keeping very busy since then. He had an incredibly memorable role in Rian Johnson’s murder mystery “Knives Out”, and earned critical acclaim in Apple’s limited series “Defending Jacob”. Next up for Evans are roles in two Netflix features: Adam McKay’s star-studded comedy “Don’t Look Up”, and The Russo Brothers’ spy thriller “The Grey Man”.

While the Deadline article created a lot of buzz and speculation online, Evans was quick to deny the rumor. “News to me,” Evans tweeted only a few hours after the article broke. Since then, there has been no comment from Evans or Marvel Studios, nor have there been further developments in the rumor: as a result, the possibility of Captain America’s return is pure speculation at this time.

It’s also worth noting that, were Captain America to return to the MCU, his place - as well as the direction films that feature him could go in - is hard to pin down. “Endgame” concluded with Rogers, after having spent an entire lifetime in an alternate timeline with Peggy Carter, handing the iconic shield and the Captain America mantle itself to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), an event that is presumably the stimulus for the upcoming Disney+ miniseries “Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, starring Mackie and Sebastian Stan. It’s unlikely that Rogers fits into the story that series is going to tell, which makes it possible that a new Captain America film could instead give audiences a look at Rogers’ life and actions in the alternate timeline.
