'Army of the Dead' Trailer Showcases Zack Snyder's Direction Post-'Justice League'
Dave Bautista leads a monster cast in Zack Snyder’s next action monstrosity, set in a bleak Las Vegas overrun with an assortment of different zombies.
Netflix released the first trailer for Zack Snyder's next film on Tuesday. The trailer for “Army of the Dead” showcases a group of mercenaries - led by wrestling and acting titan Dave Bautista - fighting through a zombie-ravaged Las Vegas as they look to pull off a massive bank heist. The film is scheduled for a theatrical run in select theatres starting May 14th, and to make its streaming debut on Netflix on May 21st.
This isn’t the first time Snyder has delved into the zombie genre, having directed the 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead”, which is generally considered to be a fun retelling of the original, and also a catalyst for Snyder’s career. Now, more than 15 years later, he has decided to dive back into the genre with this new film. This time around though, the zombies seem to be much faster and more intelligent, with parallels to the zombies in “World War Z". Another element seen in the trailer is that not only are humans infected by this zombie virus, but also animals as we get a brief glimpse of a “zombie tiger” in the trailer.
Lots of buzz surrounds “Army of the Dead”, due to its creator and all the attention around the Snyder Cut of “Justice League”. The #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign was ultimately successful, but now the fans behind it are on to a new campaign as they look to get Warner Bros. to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse. While we wait to see what comes of that, Zack Snyder has brought us something different with “Army of The Dead”.
Some controversy came with the film, as former cast member Chris D’Elia was hit with multiple sexual assault allegations, causing him to drop out of the film and his character to be recast. Stand-up legend Tig Notaro was chosen to replace D’Elia, but since the majority of the film had already been shot, they had to go back and do reshoots in order to place her in the movie. We will see how the reshoots impact the quality of the final product in terms of CGI work.
As we dive into a post Snyder Cut world, one may wonder what will happen for the future of the Snyderverse. As one of the biggest directors in the industry right now, Snyder is trying to carve a new path forward while also going back to his roots.
“Army of the Dead” is directed by Zack Snyder, and stars Dave Bautista, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, and Hiroyuki Sanada, and is scheduled to release in select theatres on May 14th, 2021, followed by Netflix on May 21st.
