FilmSpeak EXCLUSIVE: First Track from ‘The Lost City’

After its highly-anticipated premiere on March 12 at SXSW, The Lost City will open in theatres nationwide tomorrow.

The Lost City centers on Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock), who, despite writing about exotic locations, swashbuckling adventures, and swoon-worthy love affairs, prefers to keep to herself and live a relatively quiet life. Her book covers feature the handsome Alan (Channing Tatum), a model who aspires to fully embody the heroic (and fictional) Dash, hero of Loretta’s novels. While on a promotional book tour, Loretta is taken hostage by an odd billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) because he believes she has the answers to the location of an ancient treasure she mentioned in her latest book. Alan sees Loretta’s kidnapping as his moment to finally fulfill his heroic ambitions, and follows them to the jungle. What follows is a hijinks-filled rescue adventure.

In celebration of the release of the new movie, FilmSpeak has been given exclusive access to debut “The Lost City of D,” a song from Pinar Toprak’s score.

The Lost City of D” is joyous, and as the opening notes swell, it immediately takes the listener back in time to the adventure movies of yesteryear. The movie’s lighthearted, comedic energy shines through the big brass sounds, while violins allude to the dangers that await Alan and Loretta in the jungle.

“Writing this score brought me back to why I fell in love with film scores in the first place,” says Toprak. “The adventure, the romance, and most importantly the FUN. It’s been a pure joy paying homage to those classic adventure films I loved growing up, while giving it my own contemporary signature. It’s my sincerest hope that this score, like the ones that inspired me as a child, will withstand the test of time as well.”

Composer Pinar Toprak

Toprak is no stranger to composing for large-scale, action-adventure projects. She has written music for three superhero works: Captain Marvel, DC’s Stargirl on The CW, and SY-FY’s Krypton. It looks like 2022 is also shaping up to be a big year for Toprak. Her music will appear in upcoming films for Netflix and Lionsgate that feature stars like Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Coolidge, and Jason Momoa.

In addition to her work in film and television, Toprak has written the new main theme for Walt Disney World’s EPCOT park, songs for the hugely popular Fortnite video game, and music for Christina Aguilera’s 2019 Xperience show in Las Vegas. She attended Berklee College of Music, where she studied film scoring before she relocated to Los Angeles. It was in Los Angeles that she earned her master’s degree in composition at the age of 22. Toprak is an exciting new voice in Hollywood composing, and is already making quite a name for herself. She won the 2019 ASCAP Shirley Walker Award and a 2019 IFMCA (International Film Music Critics Association) Award. Toprak has also been shortlisted for an Academy Award for her work on the score of The Lightkeepers, and received an Emmy nomination for the HBO docuseries McMillions.

The soundtrack will be available digitally from Paramount Music on March 25, and on Limited Edition CD from www.lalalandrecords.com on March 29. The soundtrack will also feature three new songs by Grammy and Latin Grammy award winner Cheche Alara.
