Marvel Reveals John Watts Directing 'Fantastic Four,' 'Secret Invasion,' and MORE at Disney Investor Day 2020
Marvel Studios released a wide array of news for the future of their Marvel Cinematic Universe both on the big screen and on Disney+ during Disney Investor Day 2020 including trailers, fan-favorite returns, title reveals, and more.
The announcements started with the release of the final “WandaVision” trailer, which premieres in just over a month on January 15, 2021, along with our first official trailer for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” premiering March 19, 2021 and our first official trailers for “Loki” and “What If…?” with no official release date of yet. All of these will be covered in their own respective titles.
Tim Roth was announced to be returning as Emil Blonsky/Abomination for the upcoming “She-Hulk” Disney+ TV series in an antagonistic role. Also confirmed was that Mark Ruffalo would return as Bruce Banner/The Hulk as a main supporting character throughout the series.
A “Secret Invasion” Disney+ series was also announced starring Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury, and Ben Mendelsohn returning as the Skrull Talos. The series will adapt the iconic “Secret Invasion” comics storyline, and originally featured Skrulls secretly infiltrating Earth and taking on the identities of several prominent characters and people. However, with the Skrulls turned into surprise protagonists in 2019’s “Captain Marvel” and the tease of “Kree sleeper cells” in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” it is possible this series will flip this on its head and make Kree the hidden sinister sleeper agents.
To help carry on the legacy of Tony Stark and Iron Man, it was announced that Dominique Thorne (best known for appearing in “If Beale Street Could Talk” and the upcoming “Judas and the Black Messiah”) would star in her own “Ironheart” Disney+ series.
On the same note, it was revealed that Don Cheadle will return as the star of his own War Machine-centric spinoff called “Armor Wars” for Disney+.
In casting revelation news, Christian Bale was revealed to be portraying Gorr the God Butcher in “Thor: Love and Thunder” as the film’s main antagonist, proving correct countless predictions of the Internet since his first casting.
It was also revealed that James Gunn would return to write and direct a live-action “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” short film with the Guardians cast returning prospectively for Christmas next year or in 2022.
“Captain Marvel 2,” set to be the second film in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will also feature Iman Vellani in a main supporting role, carrying over her character of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel from her titular Disney+ series premiering next year. Teyonah Parris will also be reprising her role as Monica Rambeau from the “WandaVision” Disney+ series.
The title for Ant-Man 3 was officially revealed to be “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania” and will feature Jonathan Majors as the film’s main antagonist Kang the Conqueror, and feature Kathryn Newton (fresh off last month’s hit slasher-comedy “Freaky”) as grown Cassie Lang.
Kevin Feige also took the stage to confirm that Chadwick Boseman will NOT be recast as T’Challa in “Black Panther 2.”
The last bit of Marvel news was that MCU alum Jon Watts will direct the upcoming MCU “Fantastic Four” film. Watts is best known for being the director of “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” and the upcoming yet-to-be-titled “Spider-Man 3.”
All of these MCU projects will be released everywhere from next month through 2023.
