‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness’ Trailer Promises Many Surprises

If you missed it at the very end of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, wait no more

Fresh off the record shattering opening for the latest Spidey flick, Marvel Studios has released the trailer for its next big screen event feature ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. Not only is it a follow up to the studio’s 2016 original, it also ties in to the events of ‘No Way Home’ and other MCU content. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Stephen Strange, the neurosurgeon turned Master of the Mystic Arts. Other cast members from the previous film coming back are Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor while Elizabeth Olsen reprises her role as Wanda Maximoff. Sam Raimi, who directed the original Spider-Man trilogy comes back to the genre by helming this sure to be epic blockbuster.

The film takes place after No Way Home and sees Doctor Strange struggle with the consequences of his actions in that movie as the result of his spell that caused major fallout for the multiverse. As a result, everything has started to crumble around him. Monsters start appearing, Strange’s former ally Mordo has turned against him and even an evil version of the doctor himself appears. Knowing he can’t undo his actions on his own, he teams up with Wanda, still on the run from the events of Wandavision and fellow sorcerer Wong to se things right before both universes are destroyed forever.

The trailer does a fantastic job of not only showing the fallout from previous MCU titles but also the sort of tone that it will be going for. Raimi is known for directing films that are dark, filled with strange creatures yet still have a sense of humour to them. The dark shots shown in the trailer are a definite sign that he will bring some of his signature style to the MCU. The first Doctor Strange was known for its mind bending effects work and that is clearly returning here too.

When released in 2016, ‘Doctor Strange; grossed almost $680 million worldwide and although that isn’t particularly high in terms of highest grossing MCU movies, it was still a phenomenal result for a fairly unknown character to the mainstream. Plus, we’re talking about a series of films that has made $25 billion worldwide and has only gotten bigger. That said, the goodwill from No Way Home will without a doubt spill over to Multiverse of Madness in that hardcore fans and even many casual ones will not want to miss out on the next instalment. That has happened before with Marvel as ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘Thor The Dark World’ and “Captain America The Winter Soldier’ all benefited from a post-Avengers bump while ‘Spider Man: Far From Home’ got a major boost coming off of ‘Endgame’ so the same should apply here.

Anticipation for this was always going to be high but thanks to many different factors, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could not have asked for any more strength as it begins its marketing push. With the Spidey sequel ruling the box office, Cumberbatch gaining traction with his sure to be nominated performance in ‘Power of the Dog’, Raimi coming back to a genre he helped bring to the mainstream and of course the Marvel brand, this is one 2022 blockbuster that will no doubt bring in the big bucks

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness kicks off the summer movie season May 6.
