Paramount Debuts ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ Trailer

Everyone’s favorite blue blur has returned for his next theatrical adventure.

Paramount Pictures has premiered the first trailer for ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2’, the highly anticipated sequel to one of 2020’s few blockbusters based on the long running Sega video game franchise. Jeff Fowler is back in the director’s chair, original cast members Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter and Jim Carrey are also returning and making their debuts in the series are voice actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Sonic’s yellow fox friend Tails, a role she has voiced for many years in video game form and Idris Elba will lend his powerful voice to the hedgehog’s sometimes enemy sometimes friend the red Echidna, Knuckles.

This latest instalment sees Sonic (Schwartz) living happily in the town of Green Hill with his adoptive parents Tom (Marsden) and Maddie (Sumpter). This normality is shattered with the return of the evil Dr. Robotnik (Carrey) only this time, Eggman has a new and powerful partner on his side with Knuckles. The duo is bent on achieving world domination by tracking down a powerful emerald that can conquer and destroy civilization as we know it. Determined to show his heroic abilities and show Tom and Maddie how independent and responsible he is, Sonic goes on an adventure with his friend Tails to retrieve the emerald and thwart Robotnik once again.

The first Sonic The Hedgehog movie became a surprise hit when it was released in February 2020. Although its box office legs were cut short by COVID and the ensuing theatre closures, the film managed to gross a very solid $320 million worldwide on a budget of $85-90 million plus more in VOD. This success gave Paramount a crucial franchise and quickly green lit a sequel with much of the same production team and adding new beloved characters to the mix to keep the franchise’s immense fanbase excited.

From the trailer, it seems like this follow up will be in the same vein as its predecessor as the first footage shows a solid mix of comedic humour with Sonic’s snarky one liners and Carrey’s manic over the top performance that reminds audiences of his earlier 90s work. It also doesn’t shy away from showing the action parts promising fans that they will get a fun adventure. Although he is only briefly seen in the end of the trailer, Knuckles is able to leave an impression and Elba once again showcases his powerful vocals to give this fan favourite a strong presence. This should be another solid hit that will appeal to a wide audience over the Easter holiday.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 opens in theaters April 8.
